The first computers were people! That is, computers were originally human beings (usually women) who performed calculations or computations by hand. This began to change during the Industrial Revolution of the late 1700s and early 1800s, when businesses started to use machines powered by steam engines to do some of their work. The Jacquard loom, invented in 1801, used punch cards to automatically weave complex patterns in cloth. punch cards were also used to control player pianos.
By the mid-1800s, there were many businesses that needed to perform large-scale calculations and so they began to hire people specifically for this purpose. These workers became known as “computers”, a term derived from the word “compute”, meaning “to calculate”.
The first electronic computers
The first electronic computers were created in the early 1940s. These early machines were large, expensive, and difficult to use. They were used mainly for government and military purposes.
In the 1950s, a company called International Business Machines (IBM) began making computers that were smaller and easier to use. IBM’s first commercially successful computer was the IBM 7094, released in 1961.
During the 1960s, other companies began making computers, including Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) and Control Data Corporation (CDC). These companies made computers that were used for business and scientific applications.
In the 1970s, a company called Apple Computer was founded by two college dropouts named Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak. Apple released its first computer, the Apple I, in 1976. The Apple II was released in 1977 and became one of the most popular home computers of all time.
The 1980s saw the rise of personal computers (PCs). PCs were cheaper and easier to use than earlier computers, and they quickly became very popular. During the 1980s, two more companies emerged as leaders in the computer industry: Microsoft and Intel. Microsoft released its first operating system, MS-DOS (Microsoft Disk Operating System), in 1981. Intel produced the first microprocessor, the Intel 8086, in 1978. The 8086 was used in early PCs such as the IBM PC/AT (released in 1984).
